About the service
What is NHS Pharmacy First
Pharmacy First is a new NHS service that enables community pharmacists to assess common conditions and, where appropriate, supply prescription treatment that you would previously access through your GP.
It was introduced in January 2024 to reduce pressure on GP surgeries and to give patients a faster and more convenient way to manage common conditions.
The service is free because the NHS funds pharmacists to carry out consultations and provide advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Pharmacy First scheme
Pharmacy First allows pharmacists to provide expert advice and, where clinically appropriate, supply NHS funded treatment for a set of common conditions. These include sore throat, sinusitis, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, and uncomplicated UTIs in women.
Is delivery free
Yes. Next day delivery is free. If you normally pay for NHS prescriptions, the usual prescription charge still applies.
What prescriptions can I get from Pharmacy First
Where clinically appropriate, Pharmacy First can cover sore throat, sinusitis, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, and uncomplicated UTIs in women.
Can you buy antibiotics over the counter
No. Antibiotics are prescription only. Through Pharmacy First, a pharmacist may be able to supply antibiotics where clinically appropriate.
What is the difference between a pharmacist and a chemist
In the UK, chemist is a common name for a pharmacy. The healthcare professional who checks and supplies medicines is the pharmacist.
Is Pharmacy First really free
The consultation is free as it is funded by the NHS. If you normally pay for NHS prescriptions, the usual prescription charge may apply.
Why did the NHS launch Pharmacy First
The scheme helps people access quicker care for common conditions and reduces pressure on GP services.
How long is a Pharmacy First consultation
Most consultations take around 10 minutes. The pharmacist will advise if any follow up is needed.
How do I pay for my prescription
If you have an NHS exemption or a prescription prepayment certificate, you will not pay. If you normally pay, you can pay securely after the consultation.
Do I need to do anything before my appointment
When booking, you will complete a short form about your symptoms. Then simply join your consultation at the booked time.
Can I reschedule my appointment
Yes. You can reschedule a future appointment from your account or contact us for help.
Will you let my GP know about the appointment
With your consent, information is shared with your GP and recorded on your NHS record as part of this NHS service.
Why can you not cover earache under Pharmacy First
Earache often requires a clinician to look directly into the ear, which cannot be done remotely.
Does Pharmacy First cover children
Yes, depending on the condition. Some Pharmacy First pathways start from age 1, while others have higher age limits.
Who will see me during my consultation
Pharmacy First consultations are carried out by a registered pharmacist. Other services may be delivered by different healthcare professionals depending on the service you choose.
