Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect the bladder, kidneys and the tubes connecting to them. These are very common infections, especially for women. Some women experience urinary tract infections regularly which are called recurrent UTIs.
What causes UTIs
UTIs are caused by bacteria from stools entering the urinary tract. Due to women having a shorter urethra than men, bacteria is more likely to reach the bladder and kidneys and cause an infection.

Are UTIs painful
UTIs are painful and uncomfortable, but usually pass within a few days. They can be treated with antibiotics.
What increases the risk of UTIs
Many things can increase the risk of UTIs including pregnancy, having sex, not drinking enough fluids, not keeping the genital area clean and dry, as well as conditions that block the urinary tract.
How to help prevent a UTI
We have a few points for you to try to help prevent a UTI happening, or one returning. Keep the area clean and dry. Drink plenty of fluid, particularly water. Wipe from front to back when using the toilet. Use the toilet as soon as possible after sex.
