Impetigo
Impetigo is a skin infection. It is usually easy to treat and often improves within 7 to 10 days with the right care. Because it can spread easily, it is best to get advice as soon as symptoms appear.
Who can get impetigo
Impetigo can affect both adults and children. It is more common in young children, especially in nurseries and schools, because it spreads through close contact.
Symptoms of impetigo
Impetigo often starts with red sores or blisters that quickly burst and leave crusty golden brown patches. It can be itchy and irritating. It spreads easily through touch, clothing, bedding, and towels, so careful hygiene is important.
When it stops being contagious
Impetigo usually stops being contagious 48 hours after starting treatment. If you are not using treatment, it is generally no longer contagious once the sores have dried out and crusted over.
Treatment
A clinician may recommend antibiotic cream to help clear the infection. If symptoms are severe or widespread, tablets may be advised. Because it is contagious, you may sometimes be offered a phone or video appointment.
Need help now
If symptoms are worsening, spreading quickly, or you feel unwell, seek urgent medical advice.
